August 9th - Tokyo: Akihabara

After dinner, Garrett and I took the metro to check out the area called Akihabara which is known for it's electronics, anime, video games and otaku (geek/nerd) culture.

We saw a lot of capsule vending machines (whole stores filled with machines where you enter coins and hope to get a specific toy), claw games (same idea, but you control the giant claw to try to grab the "prize" that you want), weird anime shops, and flashing lights.

There was also an abundance of maid cafes. I still don't really understand the maid cafe thing - maybe we'll go to one before we leave, but for now, the Japanese girls dressed in maid costumes trying to convince you to come into the cafe to have a drink didn't seem that appealing.

We didn't really go into many of the stores.  It was exciting enough to just people watch.  Lots going on, very different atmosphere (like a cross between downtown Thailand and Picadilly Circus (London).  Overall, not really my thing - but still pretty interesting.
